Description	Confederate money was not backed by hard assets; rather it was a promissory note that ensured the bearer a certain amount of money if the South could guarantee its independence and win the war. As the tide of the war turned towards the North, Confederate currency became inflated and began to lose power. Most bills featured an inscription like this one, which said“Two Years after the ratification of a treaty of peace between the Confederate States and the United States the Confederate States of America will pay Ten Dollars to the bearer.” The dates would be pushed further and further out as hopes of a Southern victory diminished.
