Description	This gold tari was minted at Messina, Sicily during the reign of Frederick II Hohenstaufen (1197-1250 AD). The obverse features an eagle, and the reverse features a cross and legend or inscription. After he was crowned emperor in 1220, Frederick II introduced the eagle image on the obverse of his Sicilian coins. Frederick II was part of the German Hohenstaufen dynasty. His father died in 1197 AD, and Frederick was crowned king of Sicily at the age of three or four. Frederick II was also crowned king of Germany in 1212 AD and Holy Roman Emperor in 1220 AD. In 1228 AD, he embarked upon a successful crusade to the Holy Land, gaining Jerusalem and other cities in a treaty with the Sultan of Egypt. Beginning in 1228 and lasting until his death in 1250 AD, however, Frederick II had conflicts with the papacy and was excommunicated several times.
