Description	The Lincoln Wheat Cents were minted from 1909 to 1959 when the reverse changed to feature the Lincoln Memorial. These pennies were the first American coinage to feature a historical figure and to have the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST". President Theodore Roosevelt encouraged the making of these coins in 1909 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Lincoln's birth. Originally he did not want the coins to bear "IN GOD WE TRUST" but president Taft, who over saw the final designs of the coin, decided to include the motto. The coins began circulating on August second and were so popular that several banks ran out on the first day.
